In 2008 a vote came up for
people to vote for
or against a $2/week tax on all who work in Mon County. This
would go to fixing the many times many pot holes in our
roads. I
voted 'no' in this vote, because the funds for road
construction
come from the tax on our gasoline purchases.
It seems to me, that if the tax on
gasoline ($0.49
per gallon in WV) is not enough to cover the costs of road construction
then another solution must be sought. We were told after this
"Fee" was turned down then, that it w
as our responsibility
to come up with an alternative plan. This is
ludicrous. The
reason we hired those men and women was to come up with such a plan.
If we cannot afford to fix the roads
with the
current gas tax, that money has to come from somewhere. The
legislature often forgets that it is not
their
money they are spending, it's yours! The solution is not to
raise
the gas tax. The solution is to save elsewhere, and
reallocate
the funds. Currently there is a surplus in the State Budget,
and
a surplus in the City Budget. How is it, then, that we do not
have enough money to fix our roads?
I
will keep this in mind, that it is yours and my money that is being
spent, not a never-ending pile that some seem to think it is.
Taxes are too high, government is too big. These are fixable
problems if we are willing to work for them.
